  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water, plus more if needed
  • Vegetable oil, for deep frying

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rolling pin
  • heavy pan or deep skillet
  • Tongs
  • paper towels

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly add warm water until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead dough on a floured surface for 3-5 minutes until smooth. Cover and rest for 30 minutes.
  3. Divide dough into 6-8 pieces. Roll or flatten each piece into 1/4-inch thick circles.
  4. Heat 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy pan to about 350°F. Test with a small piece of dough to check temperature.
  5. Fry each piece 1-2 minutes per side until puffed and golden. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve warm with savory toppings like taco meat and cheese, or sweet ones like honey or powdered sugar.

Notes

Top with taco meat, cheese, beans, or veggies for a savory version. Or go sweet with honey, powdered sugar, or jam. Best served warm and fresh for the perfect texture.
