Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (plus more for coating)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Hand or stand mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • parchment-lined baking sheet
  • Spatula
  • Wire cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in flour and salt, then stir in chopped nuts.
  3. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheet, spacing 1 inch apart.
  4. Bake 12–15 minutes until bottoms are lightly golden. Tops should remain pale.
  5. Cool for 5 minutes, then roll warm cookies in powdered sugar. Once fully cooled, roll again for full snowy coating.
  6. Store in an airtight container for up to a week and enjoy.

Notes

Use either walnuts or pecans for a traditional flavor. For extra festive flair, add a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom. Roll the cookies twice in powdered sugar — once while warm and again after cooling — to get that perfect snowy finish.
