Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar (reduce to 2 tbsp if preferred)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 12 oz beer (1 bottle)
  • 8 tbsp butter, divided

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 9x5 inch loaf pan
  • Oven
  • Wire rack

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and set aside.
  2. Melt two tablespoons of butter and set aside to cool. Slice the remaining butter into 6 to 8 pieces and set aside.
  3. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Add beer and stir just until almost combined. Add melted butter and stir to combine.
  5. Transfer batter to prepared pan and top with sliced butter.
  6. Bake for 50–65 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Brush with extra melted butter if desired.
  7. Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm with butter or honey.

Notes

Try different beers for unique flavors: lagers for a light loaf, IPAs for hoppy notes, or stouts for a rich, deep taste. You can also reduce the sugar to make it less sweet. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam.
